Etymology

Abbreviation of Echinofossulocactus. Orcutt: “There is an unwritten law against the use of names of undue length, hence we venture to adopt a useable form.” Perhaps also an allusion to Latin effossus ‘excavated’ and Alwin Berger’s complaint that “Britton and Rose dug up the awkward name Echinofossulocactus Lawrence (1841) for this group” (Berger, Kakteen: 244. 1929).
