Etymology

Presumably named for Alexandre Eyriès of Le Havre, France, who sent Turpin four specimens (Hovey in Mag. Hort. Bot. 1837: 331-339). According to Eggli & Newton (Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004) the name refers to J.B. Eyriès of Le Havre, i.e. Alexandre’s better-known brother Jean-Baptiste Benoît Eyriès (1767-1846).
