🌵 Type Echinofossulocactus coptonogonus
Etymology

Latin ĕchīnus ‘sea-urchin, hedgehog’ + Latin fossŭla ‘furrow’ + Cactus. For the similarity of the flowers and fruits to those of Echinocactus (from which this genus was split off) and for the many thin ribs (“Surface angled or furrowed”). See also Stenocactus, Brittonrosea and Efossus.

Boerner (Taschenwörterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 4. Auflage. 1989) called Echinofossulocactus, Austrocylindropuntia and Cephalocleistocactus “word monstrosities” (“Wortungetüme”).

Britton & Rose (Cactaceae 3, 1922: 109) designated Echinofossulocactus coptonogonus as the type of Echinofossulocactus. If this is accepted, Echinofossulocactus is the correct name for Stenocactus. David Hunt (Cactus and Succulent Journal of Great Britain 42(4), 1980: 105-107) designated Echinocactus helophorus as the new type in order to render Echinofossulocactus a synonym of Echinocactus.

“Botanical Latin is essentially a written language, but the scientific names of plants often occur in speech. How they are pronounced really matters little provided they sound pleasant and are understood by all concerned.”
