Etymology

Greek neos ‘new’ + Latin căpillus ‘hair’. Publication by Weniger not seen. Presumably for the white hairs in the areoles of seedlings, which dinstuingish the taxon from the other varieties of Echinocereus viridiflorus (Zimmerman, Cacti Trans-Pecos: 269. 2004).
