Latin trĭ– ‘three’ + botanical Latin glōchĭdĭum ‘spine, glochid’ + Latin –ātus ‘having, -like’. For the number of spines per areole, generally three in older specimens. Engelmann: “spines in young specimens 4 to 6, in older ones generally 3, two lateral ones 8 to 14 lines long, one bent down only 6 to 8 lines long.” Not for the “spines with each 3 barbs” (Genaust, Etymologisches Wörterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 3. Auflage. 1996).
