Latin spīna ‘spine’ + Latin gemmātus ‘having buds’. Lau: “What fascinated me the most was the very heavily spined [flower] bud (bristle-fine spines). After consultation with Dr. Gerhard Frank from Hirschberg, with whom I have been collaborating for years on Echinocereus, I follow his suggestion and name this new species Echinocereus spinigemmatus.”
