Latin vÄ•nustus ‘charming, beautiful’. Publication not seen. Presumably for the attractive flowers. Compare the epithet of the species Echinocereus pulchellus (Latin pulchellus ‘beautiful little’) and that of Echinocereus pulchellus var. amoenus (Latin ămoenus ‘pleasant, delightful, charming’).
