Latin prīmus ‘first’ + Latin lānātus ‘woolly’. Named but not described by Fritz Schwarz, who discovered the species. Perhaps for the hairlike central spines that are only present on young stems. According to Eggli & Newton (Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004) “for the outstanding white colour of the spination”.
