Etymology

Latin păpilla ‘nipple’ + Latin –ōsus ‘full of’. For the ribs which are dissolved into tubercles. Rümpler gave the species the German name Warzen-Igel-Kerzencactus ‘tubercle hedgehog candle-cactus’. Not to be confused with Peniocereus papillosus (basionym Wilcoxia papillosa).
