Etymology

Named for German-American physician and botanist George Engelmann (1809-1884). Engelmann published the name himself, but attributed it to Charles Christopher Parry. Compare Opuntia engelmannii.

The English name strawberry cactus for this and several related species refers to the strawberry-like flavor of the fruit.
