Etymology

Greek chrysos ‘gold’ + Greek kentron ‘spine, point, center’. For the “deep golden-yellow” central spines (Engelmann & Bigelow). Not “for the flower colour” (Eggli & Newton, Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004).
