Etymology

Latin gilvus ‘pale yellow’. For the “isabelline flowers”, which distinguished the species from Echinocactus echidne (= Ferocactus echidne) as understood by Dietrich. The name contrasts with that of Echinocactus sulphureus (Latin sulphÅ­rÄ•us ‘sulphurous, sulphur-yellow’) (= Stenocactus sulphureus), which was described on the same page.
