Etymology

Ebner +Latin -ella, diminutive suffix, also used to form generic names (usually from personal names) without implication of smallness (Stearn, Botanical Latin. 3rd Edition: 289. 1983). Buxbaum (in Oesterr. Bot. Z. 98(1/2): 88. 1951): “The genus was named after the cactus importer Mr Otto Ebner, Zürich, whose support made it possible for me to carry out the research for this paper.” The rather unusual suffix –ella was probably chosen to distinguish the genus from Monvillea subgen. Ebneria Backeb. (1948). Buxbaum (in Z. Sukkulentenk. v: 3. 1954): “[M]y generic name [Ebnerella] must be referred to synonymy in favor of Chilita. [footnote:] I regret this all the more as, by naming these beautiful plants, I wanted to create a lasting monument for my patron, Mr. Otto Ebner of Zürich.”
