Not explained by Doweld. Presumably named for German epicactus hybridizer Kurt Petersen, who produced several Disocactus macranthus hybrids (Petersen in Kakteen And. Sukk. 41(10): 238-239. 1990). Doweld erroneously abbreviated the name as “× H. petersenii“, apparently confusing ×Disisocactus with ×Heliorhipsalis, which was published on the same page.
