Greek pseudo– ‘false, appearing to be’ + Latin īnsīgnis ‘distinguished, remarkable’. This name was published for a species erroneously identified as Discocactus insignis by Albert Buining. Taylor and Zappi: “Since D. insignis sensu Buining has become rather well-known in cultivation under this misapplied name, we are proposing the above substitute.”
