Latin plăcentÄformis (Latin plăcenta ‘cake’ + Latin –formis ‘-shaped’) ‘having the shape of a circular thickened disk somewhat thinner about the middle’ (Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary. 1913). For the shape of the plant body, described by Lehman as “hemispherical-depressed” (“hemisphaerico-depressus”).
