Latin fūnis ‘rope’. For the “long, dangling, rope-like stems common in this species when found growing on horizontal branches of trees”. Compare Tacinga funalis and Rhipsalis funalis (= Rhipsalis grandiflora) (Latin fūnālis ‘rope-like, vine-like’).
