Named for American topographical engineer Captain Amiel Weeks Whipple (1817-1863), the commander of the expedition during which the species was discovered. Engelmann & Bigelow: “We have decided to dedidate this Opuntia [β¦] to Captain A. W. Whipple [β¦], who, by his zealous and liberal co-operation, afforded every facility in his power in the various collections of natural history.”
