Latin vīvĭpărus ‘bringing forth its young alive, viviparous’. The species is not viviparous in the usual sense of the word. For the branches that “readily drop off and take root about the old plant”, which in Rose’s view distinguished the taxon from Opuntia versicolor (= Cylindropuntia thurberi subsp. versicolor). Compare Escobaria vivipara.
