Spanish clavellina ‘carnation’, vernacular name for several plant species known for their flowers, including this taxon and Cylindropuntia alcahes. Not “From the Dim[inutive] of Lat[in] ‘clava’, club; for the shape of the stem segments” (Eggli & Newton, Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004), “From the Latin clavellus, a small club, and the possessive adjectival suffix –inus. Small-club-like Opuntia” (Crook & Mottram in Bradleya 14: 110. 1996).
