Latin spīnōsĭor ‘spinier’. For the “numerous radial spines” (Engelmann: “aculeis plurimis radiantibus”) compared to Opuntia whipplei var. whipplei and Opuntia whipplei var. laevior (now both Cylindropuntia whipplei subsp. whipplei).
