Etymology

Latin fulgÄ­dus ‘shining, brightly colored’. For the spines, described by Engelmann as “hiding the whole plant with their lustrous sheaths”. Not for “the vivid coloration of the flowers” (Genaust, Etymologisches Wörterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 3. Auflage. 1996).
