Etymology

Named for American botanist Francis Raymond Fosberg (1908-1993), who originally published the taxon as Opuntia bigelovii var. hoffmannii. The new name Opuntia fosbergii was necessary to avoid homonymy with Opuntia hoffmannii Bravo (= Opuntia pubescens).

The English name Hoffmann’s teddybear cholla is based on the original name Opuntia bigelovii var. hoffmannii; the teddybear cholla is Cylindropuntia bigelovii.
