Etymology

Spanish cholla, according to Weber the vernacular name of the species in Baja California, Mexico. Compare Opuntia alcahes (= Cylindropuntia alcahes), which was published on the same page.

According to Helia Bravo Hollis (Cact. México 1: 169. 1978), in Northern Mexico, Cylindropuntia species with more or less thick stems are referred to as choya (= cholla), while species with thin stems are called tasajo (see Cylindropuntia tesajo), tasajillo or chirrioncillo.
