Etymology

Latin sphaerĭcus ‘globose, spherical’. For the shape of the stem segments, described by Förster as “completely spherical”.

This species, or at least the form previously known as Cumulopuntia crassicylindrica, is known locally as espina, a name also in use for Cumulopuntia dimorpha (Zanotti, Keller & Zuloaga in Darwinia, nueva serie 8(1): 343, 345. 2020).
