Greek kryptos ‘hidden’ + Greek karpos ‘fruit’ + Cactus. For the fruits that dry and disintegrate inside the stem. Guiggi: “a compound name from Greek crypto “hidden” and carpo from Latinized form of Greek karpos “fruit”, referred to the hidden fruit in the stem, with the addition of the Latin cactus.”
