Etymology

Greek pseudÄ“s ‘false’ + echinus. The species was misidentified as Mammillaria echinus (= Coryphantha echinus). Bödeker: “For many years a plant has been repeatedly imported to us which, because of its habit and spines, was generally identified as Mamillaria echinus Eng. and was also in the trade as such. Since that plant is very delicate and difficult to cultivate, it probably did not flower anywhere. – Then, in 1912, I finally found out from Mr. [Frantz] De Laet in Kontich that the plant had flowered at his place and that the flower was red, which was also confirmed to me on further investigation by the former cactus breeder and trader K[arl] Knippel. It was therefore clear to me that this plant was not the “yellow-flowering” Mamillaria echinus Eng. (syn. Mamillaria radians var. echninus [sic] K. Sch.), but must be a new species.”

The epithet is often spelled pseudoechinus, but the original spelling pseudechinus is not incorrect.
