Etymology

Greek koleon ‘sheath, cabbard’ + Cephalocereus. Presumably for the “channelled cephalium” (as opposed to the “exterior cephalium” of Cephalocereus) with the flowers arising from the channels. Not for “the green bracts, which gradually change into colored petals” (Genaust, Etymologisches Wörterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 3. Auflage. 1996), a characteristic not mentioned by Backeberg.

“Botanical Latin is essentially a written language, but the scientific names of plants often occur in speech. How they are pronounced really matters little provided they sound pleasant and are understood by all concerned.”
