Etymology

Apparently named for the husband of Hildegard “Hilde” Winter, from whose nursery she distributed the seeds her brother Friedrich Ritter collected in South America.

Cleistocactus winteri is a replacement name for Cleistocactus aureispinus (F.Ritter) D.R.Hunt (1987), which is a younger homonym of Cleistocactus aureispinus Frič (1928). The species was previously in the genus Hildewintera, which is named for Hilde Winter. It is unclear why Hunt would rename it to honor Mrs. Winter’s husband rather than herself, but the epithet winteri can only refer to a male; the female form would be winterae. Although it is likely that Hunt made a mistake here, he never admitted to it and continued using the spelling winteri even after the supposed error had been pointed out by other authors. Correcting the name to Cleistocactus winterae based purely on speculation is not appropriate.
