Etymology

Latin tĕnŭis ‘thin, slender’ + Latin serpens ‘creeping, snake’. For the creeping stems that are slender compared to those of Cleistocactus serpens F.A.C.Weber (1904) and/or Cleistocactus crassiserpens Rauh & Backeb. (= Borzicactus crassiserpens) (Latin crassus ‘thick’), which was published on the same page as Cleistocactus tenuiserpens. Compare Aporocactus leptophis.
