Latin smăragdus ‘bright green precious stone (e.g. emerald)’ + Latin –flōrus ‘flowered’. For the “emerald green”-tipped flowers, which distinguish the taxon from Cereus colubrinus (= Cleistocactus baumannii). Weber published the combination Cereus smaragdiflorus, but referred to it as a “variety” of Cereus colubrinus.
