Named for German botanist Friedrich Ritter (1898-1989), who collected the species in Yungas, Bolivia. Backeberg, who published the name invalidly in Kakteen And. Sukk. 10(11): 163. 1959: “A beautiful species that is interesting in many respects, which I named after its discoverer, the successful collector Friedrich Ritter.“
