Named for German-Brazilian cactus collector Leopold (Leopoldo) Horst (1918-1987). Braun: “I name this first Cleistocactus from Brazil in honor of its discoverer and my friend, Mr. Leopoldo Horst (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). Together with A.F.H. Buining he was at the site for the first time in 1972.”
