Etymology

Latin clavatus ‘club-shaped’ + Opuntia. For the shape of the stem segments and the affinity to Opuntia. According to Mottram (Cactician 4. 2014) the type species is Opuntia clavata (= Corynopuntia clavata), but Frič and Schelle did not include that species in the genus.
