Etymology

Named in the bicentennial of Mexican independence for Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez (1768-1829), known as La Corregidora, Mexican insurgent and supporter of the Mexican War of Independence. Her husband Miguel Domínguez was corregidor of the city of Querétaro. Montes and Sánchez-Martínez: “The specific epithet honors doña Josefa Ortiz Girón (1773-1829), known in the history of Mexico as Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez (Corregidora de Querétaro) whose voice inflamed the country with the breath of freedom. It is our wish that in this year, in which we celebrate the bicentennial of the nation’s independence, all Mexicans will find the route to emancipation.”
