Etymology

Latin Gerardi, genitive (possessive) form of Gerardus. Named for Dutch-Brazilian cactus nurseryman Gerardus Hubertus Olsthoorn, who discovered the species. Taylor & Machado: “Olsthoorn is honoured with the name of this new species in view of his remarkable field studies and documented living collection that have greatly contributed to our knowledge of Cactaceae in southeastern, northeastern and northern Brazil.”
