Etymology

Latin fernambucensis ‘from Pernambuco’. For the occurrence in Pernambuco, Brazil. The epithet is often corrected to pernambucensis, but the name of the Brazilian state it refers to was often spelled Fernambuco in the 19th century; Lemaire himself gave the etymology of the epithet in Latin and French as “Cereus cujus patria est Fernambuco (cierge dont la patrie est Fernambouc)”. It is, therefore, not a spelling error and the “corrected” form pernambucensis is contrary to article 60.1 of the International Code of Nomenclature. See also article 60.3: “The liberty of correcting a name is to be used with reserve, especially if the change affects the first syllable and, above all, the first letter of the name.”
