Etymology

Greek kephalē ‘head’ + Greek –phoros ‘-bearing’. For the cephalium. A name suggested by Lemaire for Cereus senilis and Cereus columna-trajani, but changed to Cephalocereus by Louis Pfeiffer to avoid confusion with Cephalophora Cav. (1801) in the family Asteraceae. In 1839 Lemaire published the genus Pilocereus for the same two species.

The name was taken up by Boudewijn K. Boom, who published the combinations Cephalophorus palmeri (= Pilosocereus leucocephalus) and Cephalophorus chrysacanthus (= Pilosocereus chrysacanthus) in Succulenta (Netherlands) 1967: 46, 107 (1967) (not seen).
