Rümpler, who attributed the name to Benedikt Roezl: “We cannot give any information about Hoppenstedt.” According to Rud. Meyer (Monatsschr. Kakteenk. 4(5), 1894: 80) the species is named for a Mr. Hoppenstedt, a plantation owner who accompanied his friend Albert Weber on the expedition during which it was discovered (near Zapotitlán, Puebla, Mexico).
