Latin apex (stem apic-) ‘tip’ + botanical Latin cephalium ‘cephalium’ (from Greek kephalÄ“ ‘head’). For the “terminal pseudocephalium” (Dawson). The flowers and fruit are borne at the extreme apex of the branches. The epithet is a noun in apposition and should not be inflected to apicicephalius.
