Etymology

Arabic kušūṯ ‘dodder (Cuscuta L.), love vine (Cassytha filiformis L.)’. Miller misidentified Rhipsalis baccifera as Linnaeus’s Cassytha filiformis, a parasitic plant in the family Lauraceae, and described it under that name.
