Carnegie + Latin -a, the recommended suffix to form plant genus names from personal names that end with a vowel other than a (Rec. 60B.1(a), International Code of Nomenclature). Named for Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919). “The Desert Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, at Tucson, Arizona, is surrounded by typical specimens of this unique plant.”
The correct name for this taxon at the rank of subgenus is Cereus subgen. Lepidocereus.
