Etymology

Latin sub ‘almost, somewhat’ + Latin stÄ•rÄ­lis ‘sterile’. According to a local peasant the first specimen found by Ritter flowered every year, but never produced fruits; plants in another locality fruited sparingly. Ritter later discovered a population of abundantly fruiting plants which he described as Calymmanthium fertile.
