Etymology

Urumbeba, vernacular name for Tacinga palmadora (and possibly other species) in Brazil. Miscorrected to Cactus urumbella and Opuntia umbrella by Ernst Gottlieb von Steudel.

The fanciful etymology given by Crook & Mottram (Bradleya 22: 66. 2004), “Perhaps from the Latin urus, burn, and a variant of umbella, shade, i.e sunshade”, can be safely dismissed.
