Cactus aphyllus
('aphylla') Aikman (1794)
Etymology
🌵 Author(s) | A. Aikman |
Greek aphyllos ‘leafless’. Aikman’s description (“little clavicles coming out at every joint”) and the English name green withe suggest this species was not a cactus, but Vanilla claviculata (Orchidaceae); Mabberley and Bancroft (Taxon, 30(1): 13. 1981) speculated it could be Sarcostemma clausum = Funastrum clausum (Apocynaceae).
