Browning + Latin -ĭa, the recommended suffix to form plant genus names from personal names that end with a consonant (Rec. 60B.1(b), International Code of Nomenclature). Named for Webster E. Browning (1869-1942), “formerly director of the Instituto Ingles at Santiago, Chile, who for many years did efficient educational work in Chile, and who was the friend of all Americans who visited Santiago”.
