Named for Brazilian cactus specialist Eddie Esteves Pereira (1939). Hofacker & Braun: “We name the genus Bragaia in honor of its discoverer, Alexander Braga Nascimento, and the species after Eddie Esteves Pereira, who has been studying the cactus, succulent, and bromeliad flora of northeastern Brazil for 35 years.”
