Etymology

Greek brachys ‘short’ + Greek kalyx (stem kalyk-) or Latin calyx (stem calyc-) ‘calyx’ + Latin -Ä­um, a suffix to form plant genus names. For the short flower tubes, in contrast to Gymnocalycium. In Jahrb. Deutsch. Kakteen-Ges. 1941(2): 38 Backeberg placed Brachycalycium in the “turma” (an infrafamilial rank) Brachyanthi (“flower tube very short”) and Gymnocalycium in the “turma” Siphonanthi (“flower tubes ± longer, fruit scaly”).

Erroneously listed as a series of Cylindropuntia by Mottram (Cactician 4. 2014).
