Latin bŏrēus ‘northern’ + Cephalocereus. For the occurrence in North America, in contrast to Austrocephalocereus (Latin auster ‘south’). Listed as a genus by Mottram (Cactician 4. 2014), but at the cited place (Blätt. Kakteenf. 5(6): Nachtrag 1936(11): 11. 1936) it is only listed as a subgenus of Cephalocereus.
