Latin liliputanus ‘Lilliputian’. According to Werdermann, Harry Blossfeld, who discovered the species in Argentina, had described the species as “probably the smallest of all cacti”, but Werdermann remarked that “[t]he fame of being the tiniest of the cacti known so far must probably be shared with the Frailea castanea described by Backeberg.”
